From my experience its something fairly specific to western cultures. Actually I believe it is directly influenced by TV and the media (not the most popular idea i know)....
but I don't know about 'most people'... there are still plenty of people who can look through the media, read between the lines, and not be so ignorant and gullible.

I think that it seems to be getting worse this day and age even though I am only 24. It seemed that appearance and what a person had didnt matter as much back in the day but I could be wrong. Now society, tv and all around us is all about what kind of money, car, job, tan, how thin you are and how much better you are then the next one. People are phony, selfish, narrow-minded and ignorant - they only think about themselves. A girl only cares about her fake tan, how tiny she can be (breasts and butt), how fake her blond hair is and how much money her man is pulling in. A man only cares about how many women he can sleep with and his pride. I think its always been bad but it is even worse now and will only get more superficial as time goes on.

'Superficiality' is the result of confronting mass. The more people you meet, the less 'personal' you can be towards them. In a city of 3 million people, how 'deep' do you think you can be with all of them?
The larger the group, the less personal one can be with each member of the group. Superficiality, therefore, becomes a means by which an individual can 'proceed' through social interactions with a minimum of social irritation while saving their personal (and therefore deep) interactions for those close to them.
There is no way you can be 'empathetic', 'understanding', or 'knowledgeable' to 6 thousand people, let alone 6 million or 6 billion. At some point, you will be forced to resort to 'generalities' in order to simplify your decision-making. As more people mean more people affecting your life, many of them in social and/or cultural positions completely diametrical to your personal experience, how else do you suppose one should go about interacting with them?

I think people turn a blind eye to what is going around them as a protection mechanism so one does not get picked out of the crowd. I think that being superficial is an extension of this so they will keep their real selves protected. Perhaps this is because we live in crowded cities rather then in the country where everybody knows each other an wave to everybody. Lots of people are ignorant, especially gangsters, but what can we do?

No, everyone is superficial, i think that its more prominent with younger kids and the "T.V" Generation -its the conditions of our society that allow superficial comments/persons/behaviour to be accepted- these days it is more of an "in -thing" to bat your eyelids and not give a damm. For example a well known blonde hieress is renouned for her tactless comments and materialistic ideals- AND IT IS ACCEPABLE, ignorance however is a common as white bread- its always be this way, all we can do is hope that the future generation can sift through ignorant and superficial lies!

Its easier said than done.....smiles are signs of fullfillment or joy, or laughter or whatever. It seems so much easier to express a smile when a person cutting in line in the supermarket because they are black, or hispanic does this....It happens to me at least once per day, and I am sick of it. Its just easier to smile then to hear there retort about how racist I am or how unpatriotic I am....I just know that because I'm white, I should get in the back of the line, just like the tax payers of the US.
I haven't told anyone this yet, but one time I actually followed this lady that cut me off in line at the supermarket home. She lived in this huge, two story home. I know it was section 8 because that street is all no income homes. So ok, I'm supposed to pay for this person to live in some immaculate home, and smile when they cut me off in the supermarket line?? I find it hard to smile anymore.....

there are moment that we wonder why u are not protective and you are open about so much that we are committed to war again and after all the wars that we've been through it is customary to tell no one nothing, see no evil, hear no evil, and speck no evil, that is one of the causes, others are that the more the world changes the more it remains the same and the people who are suspect of being real are subject to view held outside of lock-step-methodology-very bait & switch out through once you know what you know and i'm not being paraniod just that informations is the hottest thing on the planet to the grants think tank graphics

It's definitely getting worse in some areas. As for the reason, I believe it has to do with a lot with social depression in all countries. Social depression and anxiety is what America is known for at least.

you think the people are fake of their own accord, what do the people have to gain by being fake,,well, you could be right about this, but consider there are more people now a days, but the same conditions always existed, and will continue to exist, with belief in God you might see this,in the scriptures God talks of this

People lack self confidence. They don't realize you can be liked for who you are. Culture teaches unless you have new cars, big houses, expensive clothes and all the rest you won,t be popular. It is time we realize what's on the inside counts the most.
