The Roman Empire was an old, old empire. You can call it an ancient empire. Jesus Christ lived during the rule of the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire lasted for 500 years. Most of modern day Europe and the Middle-East used to be part of the Roman Empire.
The British Empire was a modern Empire. Its conquest around the world were due to colonization in Africa, Middle-East, Asia, North and South America. The British Empire ceased to exist right after World War II, when it had to grant independence to most of its colonies.

The empires used to exist long time ago. What is left is the role of the leaders of the empires. The Kings and all their families are still recognised today but they have no direct role in todays politics.
