I believe marijuana is federally illegal because it is the most useful crop industry is capable of harvesting. Just about everything made out of petroleum can also be made from hemp, including an alcohol based gasoline. Imagine an impeccable resource that can be harvested every month and while it's being grown produces gases that are not only helpful but vital to our atmosphere and our lungs.
Forget about smoking it, grow it for the environment. Grow it for the economy.

Originally I think they had good intentions. Most people don't want other people to be wondering around high even though it happens all the time anyway. I honestly think that if it were legal, we'd hear about a lot more stupid people getting injured or making bad decisions because they had smoked too much marijuana (when I was younger, I used to drive after smoking it and it was pretty dangerous. I used to 'forget' when I was supposed to hit the brake). At least right now, it's a tiny bit more difficult to get marijuana than it would be if it were legal and it probably does keep some people from smoking it more often.
Unfortunately, at this point, they have made such a stink about it being BAD and illegal that I don't think that society could easily adjust to having it become legal if it happened suddenly. If the drinking age was lowered to 18 tomorrow, there would be a spike in alcohol related accidents/crime for awhile because young people would all rush out to the bars to celebrate. If marijuana were made legal, many people would feel compelled to smoke it just because they could and a lot of those people are probably not regular users, won't be able to handle it well and they'd probably end up in trouble. Over time, I think things would calm down though. If we stopped making such a big deal about marijuana, I think a lot of people would lose interest in it.
I know it has medical purposes. I HATE smoking pot now but I had a problem with migraines caused by an exposed nerve in my tooth once. I wasn't sleeping anymore and tons of prescription painkillers did nothing and all I could do was rock back and forth crying while waiting 2 weeks for my dentist appointment. I smoked some pot and it changed the pain to something I could deal with. I can't explain what it did but it I was able to sleep for awhile.

Honestly I really don't think it should be illegal, but of course America would have to go back to us and say "hey guys you know that whole refer madness thing, whoops sorry guys". They made such a big deal about it that it couldn't be legalized for a long time..
But, I really can't believe marijuana has ANY medical purposes, other then the fact that it might make you really hunger and that it's sorta a cure for mild impotence.. I guess.

No to the first and Yes to the second. We decriminalized it here in Canada and we don't have dope fiends running around commiting crimes. I know for a fact it is effective in reducing nausea in chemo patients, it's worth it just for that. No health risks attached to pot has ever been documented. The U.S. needs to re-examine it's drug laws.

I feel that it illegal because it is abused like alcohol.......but alcohol is a far more dangerous drug and has killed many people. And yes there are medicinal purposes for weed, as it is for most natural herbs.......
