Geocaching is a game that typically incorporates the use of a GPS, the website geocaching.com, and the co-ordinates that users have placed upon the website. You then enter the co-ords into your GPS and go hunt for the "treasure". The treasure usually consists of trinkets and junk but sometimes the hider keeps it up REALLY nice and its a TREASURE CHEST!

Its also a great way to get out of the house and enjoy the outdoors. This is why I started to do it, I needed some exercise and to enjoy the great outdoors.

There are also other sites that are geocaching related. Two of the big ones are navicaching.com and terracaching.com. The user base is quite small compared to geocaching.com but everything starts out small in the beginning!

Here's also an explanation from geocaching.com -

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.

I've been geocaching for 5 years now; it could be described as using a multi-billion dollar satellite system to find tupperware boxes. If you like walking with a purpose, treasure hunts, the excitement of finding something that everyone else is walking past, getting your (small) children and parents to go walking with you, being taken to interesting / beautiful places, then this is ideal.

You can go geocaching without a GPS receiver but it's much easier with one. Look up a nearby simple cache (there are 13,000 caches in the UK), put the longitude / latitude into a GPS, and follow the arrow. When the GPS counts down to a few metres, start looking for the hidden box.

It could be a tupperware box under a pile of sticks, a fake stone, a hollow log etc. When you find it you can exchange an item - usually low value, perhaps a toy for the next child finder and sign the logbook.

When you get back to your PC, you can log you find on the page for that geocache. I've done over 500, some UK cachers have done thousands.

It can be highly addictive, my 8 year old was most put out when I did a cache without him on Sunday. I get exercise that I didn't get before, and there is the excitement of will I find it? What will be in it?

To start, read these links for further information. If you like it, open a free account at geocaching.com and search on your postcode to show your nearest caches (probably within a mile or so). If you don't have a GPS, they are currently £50 at Maplins, perhaps less on Ebay - it doesn't need to be complicated.

Happy caching.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure", usually toys or trinkets of little monetary value.

Some idiot hides something and gives the general area.. and another group of idiots goes and looks for it using their GPS devices.

My parents do this and are always trying to get me to go with them.
