For any child I recommend an age-appropriate learning toy. Blocks, for example, are great for toddlers as they help the children develop hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills. For a one-year-old I'd recommend one of those eight-sided plastic balls with different shaped cut-outs in each side, and correspondingly shaped pieces that fit into them. Every kid this age I've ever seen with one of these shape-fitting toys has had a ball - AND begun learning even at that young age how to tell their shapes apart.

Maybe a toy shovel and bucket if she has access to sandboxes or a beach. Or board books with lots of colorful pictures

i got my daughter a walking-push toy, since i knew it wouldnt be too much longer and she'd be walking. if your daughter is allready walking, get her something with lots of buttons to push, like a play cell phone or keyboard. i also got my daughter one of thoes balls that you push certain shapes through the holes, and a set of blocks. happy birthday to your daughter!
