It drives me absolutely crazy that the government has the financial aide program and they're so picky about who gets it. You have to live in a box to afford college without the help of your parents or scholarships. My parents don't help with my college costs AT ALL and I pay them all out of pocket because our government financial aide program files me under my parents b/c i'm under 25, unmarried and have no children DESPITE the fact that I live alone and support myself. I think this is ridiculous. if they want to be so anal about who needs financial aide then i think they should have a program for students who maintain a certain GPA get a refund on college. I beleive it would encourage more students to go to college and excell which would improve our overall society. ANYONE AGREE?

If you aren't claimed as a dependent on your parents taxes then you don't have to file as a dependent on your FAFSA. Also, there are tons of scholarships merit based and income based out there. You just have to do your research.

Because back then, the educators knew the skills to make the students succeed in the world was math, reading, and writing. With just these three basic subjects, it gave the students the skills that employers needed. With these skills, students can learn to be doctors, engineers, builders, machinists, etc. The educators of today now put much more importance on subjects such as art, music, world history, social studies, etc. None of these subjects provides the skills that employers look for. If High school just concentrated on those 3 important subjects like they used to, they wouldn't need college.

I agree. You are clearly independant, and it's wrong that they still put you under your parents.

My husband and I had a hard time getting any aid, mostly because we are white. Eventually we were able to secure loans. Good luck
