Because we have department stores within easy distance of our homes where we can obtain just about anything we want at a cheap price.

If you look back to the late 1700's and early 1800's, pre-industrial revolution times, everything you had, you made at home. Early on clothing was made from scratch via cotton plants and flax, which you manufactured on your property, and in later years, bought yards of material to make your clothes with. Pots and pans were purchased from a tin smith in your town or from a peddler who only came through your area once or twice each year. Things were difficult to get, so you made do. If your pants or dress had a hole in it, you patched it up because you didn't know when you'd have more material or the time to make a new dress or pants. There was plenty of wood to build houses with - you got it from the lot you had purchased - but nails were hard to find. People who moved west often burned their houses down and collected the nails from the rubble to build their next house with. Why? Because nails were purchased from blacksmiths, and if you were moving onto the frontier, there were no blacksmiths there, so you had better bring your own nails to put the logs together for your new house.

Because at our subconscious level we think that they will someday and somehow make us happier. And happiness can be found way beyond the material things. Humans are mostly superficial, that's why. (This is my first answer, yay!!!)
