I have a '93 Ford F150, 302, 5 speed. When I let off of the gas I can hear a "clicking" sound, from what sounds like the rear of the truck. And when I accelerate I can hear a real quite whinning sound. Could this be my u-joints going bad?

93 pickup, the sound is in the back , get under the truck, grab the drive shaft, both hands if there is any slop or movement the U joints are going out. get new parts and call the corner MA &PA station , chances are they will do the shaft for you the rest of the job is easy , now the whinning noise in the back , have you ever opened the rear pig gear ? you need either a 1/2" or 3/4" ettenstion to open this up , it takes #50 lube oil, if it full it will run out if not fill it up.check your wheels bearings . my have oil on brakes.

U joints are pretty easy to check, crawl under the truck and grab the drive shaft close to the joint and try to Shake up and down and side to side, it shouldn't move. I have a slightly older F150 and i clunks the same as yours does. Greasing the u joints helped quite a bit, but the real problem is in the rear end. The only reason the rear end would be whining is if there were no fluid in it or a bearing has packed it in.

If the noise is more of a clunk when you let off the gas, it could very well be u joints or possibly the ring and pinion gear in the rear end. A whining sound could be rear brakes dragging a bad bearing. You should probably get it inspected by a mechanic to verify whats up.
