Depends if you're doing english or physics homework. Technically, resonance is a property of a system that will vibrate or oscillate more at certain frequencies of energy than at most others. It applies to sound as well as to mechanical systems (you might have seen the video of the bridge wobbling out of control during a wind storm - due to the physical properties of the bridge and the energy of the wind creating uncontrolled resonance. )
The opposite would be dissonance, or in physics terms, a "dampening" effect. This is where energy is best absorbed by the system with little or no effect on it.
In common english usage, resonance could mean a special connection or aggreement between people (her speech really resonated with the audience...)

Resonance is pretty simple:
When you tap the edge of a glass, it "rings" at a certain frequency (or tone).
If you were to duplicate this "ring" or tone precisely and played it near the glass. The glass would vibrate. If the "ring" or tone was too loud - it would shatter the glass.
Remember those Memorex commercials from *years* ago?
Most objects have a resonant frequency or tone.
Take a bell for example
when you strike it, it always gives off the same tone.
Even a mechanic's wrench has resonance.
Ever drop a tool and hear the ring?
These are examples of acoustical resonance, but there are others, like electrical resonance, where an oscillator "beats" a certain electromagnetic frequency.
