I started fruits and veggies as the first foods at 4 months, along with cereal. I mixed fruit purees (pear, Asian pear, apple, prune) with baby oatmeal, and made my own sweet potato and squash purees (and some of the fruit was homemade too).
I think no matter what you start with you will see a bout of apparent constipation with the first solids (a few days with no poop). It was because of that, that I included the fruit with the cereal (dunno if it made any difference but prunes are supposed to be laxative).
I was going over old baby stuff with my own mother recently and she had records showing her doctor had her feed me my first solids (rice cereal) at ONE month. Interesting.

The current recommendation is 6 months for solids, but i believe that every mum knows their baby best. I started my son at 5 months because he was always hungry and he took to solids really well. The jars say 3 months because the companies that manufacture them hope that people will buy them even though the recommendation is 6 months. In Australia, the lowest age ive seen on a jar is 4 months...

i started cereal about 31/2 months and stage 1 jar food around 51/2 months. i started by adding fruit to his cereal and then tried them by themselves. it is important that you wait at least 3 days in between trying something new. this gives you a chance to see if there will be any kind of allergic reactions. i actually kept a notebook and wrote it down that way you never forget what you have tried and not tried. you should do this with all food until at least a year old. hope this helps

As a general rule 6 months of age is what is recommended. If you are breastfeeding pretty exclusively they really don't need anything else until maybe 8-9 months of age. Some babies though may have more of an appetite so you would need to gauge your childs needs.

My son was 4 months we started with rice/pears.
Pears are easier on their little body than Apples or Bananas.
I actually breast fed, and then pumped and mixed it with cereal.
He is dairy intolerant- so read all those labels! I actually purchased raw oats & rice and ground them in a coffee grinder, and made it myself with his milk. Slowly adding soy milk into the mix to wein him off breast milk.
Be very careful with your own canned foods, apparently there has been a surge in poisonings of children. The sterilization of the bottles/jars of food were not adequate.
Best wishes
I used the Gerber site a lot, even if I did not use the product all the time.

My daughter was about 4 months old when I started feeding her regular foods. I would introduce new things a little at a time.

I got the go-ahead from my son's prediatrician at his 4-month visit. I've been introducing a little bit at a time - both fruits and veggies.

i want to say, around four months old. just her milk wasnt cutting it anymore! be sure not to introduce a variety, just one at a time. once you can tell what your baby likes and is not allergic to, then its ok to start a variety. my dr didnt tell me this, but they do make first stage baby food that has meat in it, like chicken and noodles. i would suggest not giving it to your baby, because the meat dosent agree with thier little tummies. just fruits and veggies to start.

i delay solids till about a year. then they pretty much eat anything offered. babies do perfectly fine on just formula or breastmilk till a year. delaying also reduces the risk of obesity, diabetes, and food allregies.

One year of age is best, but no one will agree with me. Breast milk is sufficient until one year of age. Then slowly introduce her to other foods one at a time so you can judge her reaction to each knew food. there are three foods you should avoid at first eggs, orange juice, and wheat because of a possible allergy reaction.
