I would wait a bit.
There are some very expensive unresolved lawsuits pending.
There are EPA investigations & Justice Department interest regarding both thier liabilities regarding environmental cleanup in Alaska, multiple parties are pursuing investigations of possible Corporate Coverup of Maintenance operations.
There is also investigation into explosion & fire deaths at Texas facilities & At least one lawsuit was filed. I don't know whether it was settled but all the issues have started kind of a snowball rolling down hill effect & BP have replaced some EXECS & started a PR CAMPAIGN. No one in the business world knows whether they will affect real change, or are the fixes and corrections they are publicly making really going to change the basic company operating philosophy.
Much of their profits have come from buying run down companies at a bargain price & operating the revenue producing portions of the companies without making needed improvements until the scrutiny or problems become so intense they have to make at least some public positive looking change. (This according to at least one Govt. study.)
Their potential is so great that it would be an enormously good buy IF there were not so many potential pending liabilities.

Don't do it. They have too many problems as the previous two answers explain. General Electric is a very large well diversified company that also has solar energy projects. FPL Group is a utility in Florida that owns one of the largest number of wind farms systems in the USA.

Don't buy into it. It takes many years to see a return on this kind of investment. Besides, even if they profit, it'll represent less than 1% of their earnings. BP's stock performance will be determined on how they do in the oil industry, not their dabble in the alternate energy market.
