If you are using Mozilla Firefox Browser than do this ...
1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll
down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time.
When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really
speeds up page loading.
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This
means it will make 30 requests at once.
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.
If you're using a brodband connection you'll load pages 2-30 times faster now.
ENJOY!
Also clean up your pc regularly with ccleaner .

The best way is to download Ccleaner here http://bitly.com/UrALrK
Or you can go on Windows operating system locate the command prompt and go there to do the following:
Create a Recovery file of system and date it today.
Then begin by;
delete the 'Temp' folders..they have hidden subfolders so you need to set the attributes in order to bypass this. For each subfolder delete all cookies and rubbish left behnd after install-uninstalled programs. Do a 'dir' command to check your progress. Make sure the 'Temp' file is empty.
goto c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in there..no exceptions
goto c:\windows folder and delete all the '$' files that have been installed by updates. They can all be succesfully deleted and just take up disk space.
Locate the Internet Temporary Files..Check to see how high the saving level is..some have it set at 30 days..but that stores faaaar tooo much data..though it slows down the system overal. Keep this to a minimum..suggest 2 or 5 at most.
Delete all 'cookies' all those you don't need.
Locate the windows directory and go through the folders you know and those you don't need. Check this once a week at least. Some programs will install under XP as NT and older systems where there is no check of systems weight.
Check to see that system files have not changed since last booting. Things like .ini files or .bat are important items.
Check for 'Hidden Directories' all over the disk...do this at the command prompt:
dir *.* /ah wil show these hidden directories
Check the 'dir' command for all parameters

could be alot of things. first thing i would check is how many processes you have running on your pc. most pcs come with alot of garbage software that runs on your pc right on boot up for absolutely no reason other than to make your pc run really slow in most cases. if you click start/run and type msconfig and then hit ok, that will bring up a screen where you want to go to the startup tab. I would recommend hitting the disable all button and then hit ok. you will have to reboot but things should boot up alot faster. after bootup if your internet still seems to run slow i would download ad aware or spybot to check if you have spyware running on your pc. if you have antivirus i would also run an update and scan for any possible viruses. at that point you can post another question on this site with some more detail but that should get you going in the right direction

Check for spyware. Both of these are free.
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

sometimes its just because you have to many programs running in the background. Things like office, messanger, quicktime they slow down your system so much its incredible. Even though they arent actually open they are running in the background. To fix this you need to either go into the programs themselves and check for the option to disable automatic start up or change it in the system start up settings, i.e MSCONFIG. If you do not know how to do this ask someone who does because you could really mess things up. Its an easy fix and works wonders.

You must mention here your PC configuration, and if your pc is new and the most recent configuations then it may be possible there is soo many viruses on you system, so put an updated antivirus on your system and then scan your system, and if problem occures further, then reinstall your window and install only those porgrams on your system that you needed most. Becoz loading too many programs on your system can slow down your system

bet you have windows, run a virus scan. Looks like you computer has been comprimised.
Comprimised means someone hacked your computer and placed processes to run. Does your modem lights flash all the time even when you not doing anything. Run a virus scan you might be amazed what you find.

i had this with my win xp box recently and shutdown would take 10 mins
after constant clearouts and potential upgrades the easiest option was to reformat and reinstall winXP
p.s. if the install is over 6 months old i recommend reinstallation
