If your recorder is having problems playing rental disks also then I would suspect something is wrong with the optical system to read disks. Have you tried using a CD/DVD lens cleaner? Also, can you play music CD's?

I have had the same problem and also the DVD player jams very frequently. An aerial firm told me to unpug it and take the cables out for 10 minutes

Dunno, but everyone I know who's bought an expensive, all singing, all dancing dvd player/recorder has this problem, yet if you get a cheap one they play anything you stick in 'em.
