Metal, a light colored to reflect the suns rays. Have it put down with screws. You may have two problems that will increase the price. Almost all shingle roofs have solid sheeting. Metal should have strip sheeting like you find under cedar shingles. If you put metal over solid sheeting it will sweat and rot in a short time. The other problem, what pitch roof do you have. Any thing flatter than a 4-12 I would not consider Metal. 5-12 and up is better.

Installed correctly a metal roof will out last a shingle roof at least 2 times, and maybe 4. As an example I own two houses, one had metal, the other shingles. The metal roof was installed in 1938, the shingle roof was installed in 1947, 1962, 1989 and if I am lucky last 2 more years.

I think that metal roofing is the way to go. It will of course be more expensive than shingles. If installed professionally it should also last much longer than shingles (but you always want to check out the warrenty). And contrary to popular belief, metal roofing is often quieter than an asphalt shingle roof. When installed with solid sheathing, a metal roof on your home will actually silence noise from rain, hail and bad weather better than other roofing materials. I also think that some metal roofs are beautiful.
Take care.
PS. And no, a metal roof will not rust as is made from high quality Aluminum and Aluminum does not rust..

I would think shingles would be best ... would last the longest. Im thinking metal could rust in spots? But might be fine since your in a warm climate... Is there a big price difference? If you go with shingles the architectural ones look nicer then the plain ones if it even matters to you. Also make sure you get 3 quotes on the roof so you dont overpay... :)

the metal roof has a better warranty than shingles and will outlast shingles but what you have to watch out for is the screws that the metal roof is put down with has rubber bushings around the screws and they will dry rot then you will end up having leaks.

You will hear the rain with the metal roof but it last longer and shingles are ok but I like to hear the rain hit the roof.

Pre-painted steel roofing is the best way to go. Cost is competitive, Maintenance free, very long lasting, strong, comes in many variety of colours and profiles. You can get the in a simulated tile or shingle appearance. Properly installed, (which it will be in Florida, due to hurricane requirements) it will withstand very high wind loadings.

Go with Shingles. I'm sure its humid in Florida and metal roofs will make it hotter. Metal also conducts electricity, and with thunderstorms, there could be damage done by lightening
