Army huh?
Did 11 years in the Marines and it resulted in my crackling knees. Hate to say, but they may not let you in with those knees. X rays do not show what they need to see. Been there done that. You may be different, but basically mine grind and crackle because there is little or no membrane that covers the backs of my kneecaps left. Also experience patellar tendonitis. Painful at times, yet constantly uncomfortable. You may want to see a doctor about it, better yet a sports medicine type doc. Crepitus I think is the term. As far as the spelling, I am guessing.

my knees have been cracking since I was 12 y.o. now 39. do not have arthritis and do not have ligament problems. It's air in the joints.

The cartilage in your knees is probably wearing thin. It will only get worse with time.
