cause most americans are to lazy to shift gears anymore and most girls cant drive them if it saved there life so i'm guessing that the car companys figured it best to just start doing away with them
ps) okay girls i dont want any hate mail saying i can drive a stick i'm just saying that most girls are very nervous about them and they usually need someone to teach them. so please no E-Fights tonight!!!!!!!!!!!

I prefer manual ones too. But nowadays the manufacturers are saying that with an automatic gearbox some cars with big engines are getting more economical than those with manual gearbox. For example the Subaru says that the Outback, with a 3.0ltr engine, is much more efficient and has a greater acceleration with an automatic gearbox than that with a manual one. In fact the manual Outback has a 2.5ltr engine. The same thing is for the BMW, Mercedes and Audi are introducing this thought.
Apart from that driving an automatic car is more comfortable to drive and the drive will be much more smooth cause the passengers in the car don't realise that there was a gear change (i.e. from 1st to 2nd).
Another concept for automatic transmission is to stop burning clutches by the drivers themselves and so they are stopping the changes of clutches with the guarantee.
But at the end of the day a normal transmission if is used correctly can give you 20+ years of driving without trouble no matter the size of the engine is, while an automatic transmission with a big engine will give you less than 6 years when it starts giving you trouble in the clutch brushes and 6 years later the automatic clutch will start to fade and will not continue doing its job properly.
We're in 2007 and so we have to adapt ourselves to future inventions even though we don't like them my friend and there's nothing we can do about it.

A few years ago The Big Three decided to make the standard transmission an option. I prefer them too. I have more control over the vehicle.
In my book the automatic transmission only increases maintenance costs. One thing I find is the constant pull from the engine on the brakes.

When you spend 13 hours a day driving an 18 speed, shifting gears all freakn day, you just want to put your personal vehicle in the big D and drive. It's not being lazy....just tired of shifting.

It is more safer to drive an automatic, both hand are supposed to stay on the wheel at all times, but the other are right, the lazy unemployed american with their cellphone plastered to their ear driving wrecklessly all over the place..... no wonder other countries have a bad view on us.

Being cheaper and less maintenance Not really. But how can you talk on your cell phone, smoke and drink, eat text message, etc if you have to shift gears. My answer is driving a stick in stop and go traffic is just a big pain in the butt!!

perhaps for you..........but not for most people. many drivers today don't truly under stand the operational theory of a manual transmission........clutch repairs are on the rise.......expensive too. besides automatic transmissions have come a long way in recent years!

it is a convenience factor. This country(US) is a country of convenience. We like fast food, we like all in one stores. We like automatic cars that we can multitask in. Plus women traditionally have not learned to drive sticks and they are truly a part of well over 50% of buying decisions. I have a stick and I can gaurantee it is not getting me better gas mileage or costing me less.

i think it's due to increases in manufacturing technology,
manual transmissions are more labor / machine intensive to build
