What are the reasons why people join virtual sites?

just that..i'm wondering...is it a trend, a new form of community..What do you think...opinion people please!

I just joined second life and it's interesting. I go on it every few days and meet people from all over the world.It's kind of neat to make your avatar something you'd never be in this world.Some people spend all their waking hours there and I think that becomes a problem.If done in moderation I thinks it's OK.
