All babies get constipated at one point or another, especially in their first month or so. I use Goodstart Supreme. It's the same formula that me, my sister, brother, sons, and now my daughter use. Stay away from Similac. Few babies can handle it. It's so harsh and I don't know why they recommend it. Most of the time it causes constipation or projectile vomiting. Goodstart has comfort proteins to help aid in digestion. Mylicon gas drops also help, along with substituting formula with a bottle of water once or twice a day instead. Also try bending baby's legs at the knee and holding them there in a crouching position or massaging the stomach area just below the belly button. Lastly, remember that baby's stomach is only as big as THEIR fist so don't overfeed. If they indicate they're full then leave it at that.

you will probably just have to experiment. As all (at least, that I have seen) formulas contain iron now, it is hard to find one that is more gentle on a baby's stomach. This weekend alone, I just had my daughter try bananas which are supposed to be a 1st food, but now with all the iron in cereal, milk, and everything, I no longer think it is a good idea. We ended up in the ER with severe constipation and a rectal tear (the reason we were in the ER and not the dr's office). So experiment, and lay off foods that cause constipation. Prunes, apples are good. I don't know how old your baby is. If he/she is under 5 months, then this info is probably useless. Sorry. :(
The formula that seems best for her is the organic stufff. But that was before solid food came along, and now I don't know. We switched to soy and she seems to be doing better.

Stool patterns vary normally from child to child and true constipation is infrequent. There is a wide range of normal stool frequency and consistency. Constipation is not the number of bowel movements your baby has each day, but rather it's when those infrequent movements are hard, dry stools that are difficult for your baby to pass. They may come out in hard pellets or cause pain or bleeding. Generally, infant formulas are not believed to cause constipation. But any changes in your baby's formula or feedings could cause changes in number, color and consistency of his stools. If you think your baby is constipated, call your doctor

I don't know if you use city water or well water but I know from experience if you have a lot of iron in well water that could cause constipation too. Might want to buy baby water at the store.

The ones without iron in them usually don't cause constipation. Soy doesn't either, but that's kind of a drastic switch for a baby who otherwise tolerates milk formula.
