Do I have to put my pilot lights out to clean? What can I use to clean around the pilot lights and thingers where the gas comes out? Is it safe to use ammonia- or bleach-based cleaners?

I've used everything under the sun over these many decades and haven't had a problem with flaring up except with some aerosols directly at the flame. I've never used bleach, it sanitizes, not very good at cleaning. Ammonia is far superior. Most oven cleaners have some degree of amonia. Once in awhile I'd accidently put out the oven pilot light, but that's quickly relit. Now I don't have a continual pilot in the oven, but still have them on the stove. Those little holes where the flame comes out get clogged, so have a pin or something handy.

Remember to finish any cleaning with a vinegar water wipe down, takes any chemical residue off the oven walls.

Cleaning Gas Oven With Ammonia

Only use an oven cleaner inside of an oven, whether it be gas or electric. Just follow directions and be careful around all the elements, light bulbs, and other do-hickies inside. There is no need to turn off the pilot light in a gas oven. On the top, you can use an orange cleaner or a multi-surface cleaner like Glass Plus.

Yes, it's safe to use bleach or amonia based cleaners but be cafeful not to breath them in too much. Open a window when using these products.
You can also make your own oven cleaner.

HEAVY DUTY HOMEMADE OVEN CLEANER
1t Liquid dish soap
1t Lemon juice
1-1/2t Bleach
1qt. Warm water

Mix all ingredients in cleaning bucket or bowl and apply solution (with a sponge) to the oven's cavity. Allow to sit for 45-minutes and then scrub clean. Rinse well!

Also, here's a way to use amonia to clean an oven;

1c ammonia

Pour ammonia into plastic bowl or dish (which can be easily disposed of). Place ammonia inside oven and close door. Allow to sit overnight. Remove container and wipe away stubborn stains. (Ammonia may be reused, if stored properly.)

As an alternative...if you want to try cleaning your oven the "natural way", do the following;
GRANDMA'S VINEGAR RECIPE

5T Baking soda
3 drops hand soap or liquid dish soap
4T White vinegar

Mix above ingredients until they form a thick paste. Apply paste to inside of oven and scrub with sponge. Wipe clean and rinse thoroughly.

Good luck to you!

Follow the directions for cleaning that came with your oven. Take care using just any product as it may be flammable. Best to call an appliance repair shop and ask them to be safe.
