Pickpocketing will be your main concern. Violent crime levels, however, are very low in central and western Europe - the risk is comparable to Hawaii.

Some outer suburbs of big cities, such as Paris and London, can be unsafe at night, but you have no reason to go there as a tourist.

Most of Europe is safer than the U.S. and Brazil. There is not much violent crimes. Few Europeans own a gun or carry a weapon. When travelling around Europe I think there is no reason to fear for your life more than in Hawaii. Theft is a larger concern. Beware of pickpockets and robbers.

Places I recommend avoiding are Albania, Moldavia and Bucharest (capital city of Romania, the rest of the country is apparently not as dangerous) and if you are not white then you might want to avoid Russia as well.

I don't think there is need to worry much about something horrible happening, just be careful as you would be in the U.S. and enjoy your trip! :)

Based on statistics the country with the biggest crime rates in Europe is Germany but! those crimes are like : stealin cars etc so u ll be absolutely safe there..U.K. ranks first in murders but nobody..will kill a tourist :-P In my personal opinion the most dangerous area for pocket-liftin etc are the Balcans and Italy but not more dangerous than other places...Just be a bit careful and u won't get harmed by anybody.. ;-) Ah come on u come from the U.S. Europe is more safe don't worry ;-) at least not so many people carry guns

Brazil and Europe is totally different. In Europe at least western Europe we don't have that much crime like Brazil have.

Even in the States, you can be killed by a lost shot.

I guess all you can do is not to go backpacking by yourself. have some company. I think Europe generally is less dangerous compared to Cuba, Brazil, Indonesia, Iraq etc :D
