My boyfriend is Johannesburg and I would like him to bring me back something from South Africa. He isn't sure what to buy...
Any suggestions on a great momento from So. Africa?

Depends on if you want something to wear or for decorating your home. I suggest:

1)African Zulu basket (they range in size, shape, color

2)Amber jewelry (amber is cheap in S. Africa)
3)Masai necklace (hand beaded colorful necklace)

4)Painted ostrich eggs

5)Ndebele doll

If he's got money to burn
1)Tanzanite jewelry
2)Diamond jewelry

If he does not have it yet, a good guidebook. A disk with photos, (digital, of course,) or maybe a selection of good e-books. Very useful, offer to be a contact between the many people home and him when traveling, like sending his mails on to all his friends or running a website for/with him. But whatever you do, do not give something big, as he will have to leave it behind, nor something that can raise doubts at the border crossings. So no funny jokes with white powder or little unknown packages. If you want to joke on where he is going, get a raincoat, one of the cheap one time use plastic ones will do. The Netherlands can have rain round the year.

I'd also say beads woven into an African pattern would be good but - diamonds come from South Africa and come to think of it so does gold as well as a range of semi precious stones.

A small bowl full of tumbled, polished semi precious stones would be a great gift also and they are not expensive in SA

All he needs to do is take a walk on a parade or local market, there are plenty south african and african momento's, stuff with Mandiba's face on it, t-shirts with I love Souht africa on, stuff with Cape town or Table MOuntain on, wall hangings, etc.
Personally, I would like someone to get me a pair of Mariba drums that would be stunning gift.

A box of Rooibos tea - great local caffeine-free tea and light in his luggage. Can buy at any grocery outlet.
