When you chip and xbox you do 2 things add a mod chip and change the OS (operating system). The mod chip and the new OS combined can let you play backup's of your games, copy games to the systems hard drive, use your xbox as an emulator to play old school arcade games, 8bit nintedo, super nintendo, nintendo 64, sega master system and genisis, Atari 2600, Turbo Grafx 16, and tons of other emulators. You can do all kinds of home theatre PC thing also play MP3s, watch movies, use your xbox as an FTP server. You can Download special progams called trainers to let you cheat at xbox games. You can change the skins on your xbox desktop. You can also play homebrew games, some small developers who cant find anyone to publish their game often give their games away for free. You can play these games after you chip your xbox because it can read burnable DVD's and CDRW's after its chipped. Also if you add a new harddrive into your xbox the games you copy onto your hard drive will load much much faster, so no more loading screens. If you want more info I would check out the link I included.

Well the guy before me basically got it right. My xbox is modded through softmodding though. I would reccomend that over the actual modchip. You do not spare the chance of screwing up your xbox. There are people that will actually put the stuff you need on a xbox memory unit and then send it to you so you can install it without having to mess with anything.

If your X-box is modded, it allows you to install a new operating system on the harddrive, which ultimately allows you to copy xbox games to the harddrive. This allows you to "back up" your original discs onto the harddrive so that you no longer need the discs to play the games. You simply turn on the Xbox, a menu appears with the list of games available, and you select which one you want to play. You can also download RPM files to play on the Xbox which allow you to play other systems games on the Xbox, such as old Nintendo games, Sega games, Atari games and others.
This, however, is illegal due to copyright infringement laws and I would not reccomend doing it.

In the Xbox, you can play a store bought game. Now if you burn a backup copy for yourself, the Xbox will not recognize the game. By adding the mod chip you will be able to use your burned copies. if you are not a computer board whiz, may be better to have it done for you.
