Well each month has holidays that can be traced to a root culture.
Lets just use Foods/Festivals on holidays for an example. Explain WHY
January- Chinese New Year- Fortune cookie
February- Valentines Day- British- the joy letter writing in that era
OR MartiGra- the importance of that to the USA
Carnival- Brazil - what are the parties for---religion?
March- St. Patrick's Day- Ireland- Potato famine-why its this holiday special here in USA and not in Erie? Why green? Who was Patrick? were snakes really snakes or politicians?
April- Easter- Russian Czar- Romanov"s Faberge eggs.
May-"May Day"- Rites of Spring- Norway traditions.
June- African American- art bold colors and influences
I really think that you can make each a learning experience.
We used to put a world map and pushpins and a suggestion box of ideas up, so that people could mark where they are from and what makes it special.

For Chinese New Year, there are many different artwork for home decoration. For example, Paper Cutting. You can find this in www.chinapapercut.com.
