A Blank solution is one that do not have any chemical that you are looking for or measuring or detecting. Usually, it can be as simple as just plain distilled water if you are measuring an aqueous solution. Or, in more complex determinations like you added, say adding to the solution an acid for a desired pH, one reagent to create color, another reagent to stabilize the color, etc, then your "desired component or chemical to measure", the BLANK is all those items EXCEPT your desired chemical.
Sometimes, a blank MAYBE loosely called a "control" solution.

The use of blanks are prevalent and very important in spectroscopy to negate the effects of Background. For instance, the blank may have an absorption of 10 already in the wavelength you are measuring. It is not zero so you have to subtract this to get an accurate determination of what you are measuring. By "blanking" the instrument or experiment you are assuring that any readings you get are exclusively due to the component you are measuring NOT due to extraneous chemicals in solution.

".but I find it hard to believe that a "solution" would cause more problems and heartache than the original problem." It's true, divorce can cause a lot of heartache. The difference is, which is worse? A few months of heartache dealing with a divorce, or a lifetime of heartache in a relationship you don't actually want to be in? "So many people these days will try to find any reason or excuse to turn away from their responsibility" You wouldn't appreciate it if I said your marriage was worthless, so stop trivializing the relationships and pain and heartache other people go through. Most people don't get divorced because someone forgot to buy milk; whether you agree with it or not people usually get divorced because of a pretty major reason. "especially for children involved." I'm sorry, this is a total myth. Divorce only hurts the kids if the parents allow it. If you're really a good parent, you'd accept what can't make you happy in life and then instead of forcing yourself to PRETEND to love the person you're with, you'd work with them to provide a good home for your kids, even if that home isn't with both of you in it. Don't use your kids as a shield to the fact that you aren't happy with someone, that's just immature. "how do we do that by being selfish and worrying about our own happiness" Your problem is you look at the world as black and white; WHY does worrying about our own happiness always equate selfishness? Can't you reconcile the both of them? And is the example you want to set for your children to lead a miserable life with someone they don't want to be with, just because they made a commitment long ago? People change. Accept that. I look at it this way: It's like being on an airplane, they always tell you to put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others. Why? Because you can't really help anyone if you're gasping for air on the floor. Look at happiness the same way; you can't help your kids be happy if you're miserable yourself. And don't subject your kids to YOUR misery because you have some kind of holier-than-thou attitude about it. "If Paul could be content in prison, people could learn to be content in marriage." If you honestly look at marriage as a metaphor for prison, then you're a disgusting human being and you're going to raise confused and miserable children. I weep for your kids, really I do; I wish they had a better mother.

The Blank Solution template provides you with an empty solution container to which you can add the items you work on within the integrated development environment. The other templates provided with Visual Studio .NET provide a set of project items automatically. This template gives you a way to create a solution without adding a project and its items immediately. You can find this template within the Visual Studio Solutions category found in the New Project dialog box.

You might use the Blank Solution template when you want to:

*

Develop multiple projects within a single solution and create a separate storage structure to match. For more information, see Creating Multi-Project Solutions.
*

Work on items in the Solution Items folder without a project present. Items in the Solutions folder can be compiled and built within a solution. For more information about Solution Items, see Solution Items and Working with Solution Items and Miscellaneous Items.
*

Work on files in the Miscellaneous Files folder without a project present. For more information about Miscellaneous Files, see Miscellaneous Files and Managing Files in the Miscellaneous Files Folder.

By default, new solutions are created in the location set in

Sounds like spectroscopy. A blank is used to set the background level of absorption. Google it.
