If so, what part of the LA area was it? I'm trying to figure out whether gangs are really much of a threat to the average person.
I have an idea that, for the most part, if you do not mess with them, they will not mess with you.

Not the L.A area. Cleveland, Ohio is where I am from and generally speaking you are right. They have gang wars amongst eachother. I think they are caused because of drug sales and territories, disrespect to one's "hood", etc. The general public seem most affected when a drive by goes wrong. Children die, and bullets go through unsuspecting people's houses with perfect aim straight into there head. I know the gangs in Cleveland aren't generally as deadly as those in LA, but each innocent death caused by this deserves recognition.

One time my gang got in a fight with another gang, but it was just in my neighborhood. We used the bo-staff and nunchucks, they used spiked bats and broken bottles. We still beat em up cause we have skills!
