Its not illegal. Betta splendens derives its common name for the long-standing practice of people in Thailand using it in competitive bouts bet on by mainly men. These "fights" are often staged in bars, other social settings with two short finned (fighters aren't bred for beauty) Bettas placed contiguously with a panel placed between them that is later removed, allowing the combatants to engage in a semi-ritualistic battle of fin biting and tearing. Combatants are rarely killed outright, and a referee/bookie judges when one has "lost", the other declared the winner. It is said that in times past, some wagers included bettors wives, children, even themselves into servitude!
The ones we know today (colorful with flowing fins) have been bred for beauty and aren't properly conditioned for fighting. It is considered "inhumane"

yes, more than 1 beta fish in a tank will fight each other, however there is cases of where ive heard beta fish fighting at first, but then making a chain of command that lets them peacefully co exist. Beta fish will fight anything that has fins the size, close to, or bigger than theirs.

If you do it in the privacy of your own home, no one will know. If you post it on YouTube, you'll have PETA crazies on the war path. I can't say I've done this before, but I did want to and when I went to buy them the guy at pet store would not sell me them. I don't know if it's cause I wanted more than one or just because I looked to happy. If you're gonna do it I think you should have different people buy them one at a time, and don't say you're gonna fight um or they wont sell them to you. Good luck you sick bastard.

the fancy bettas bred for petshops and shows aren't very good at fighting. they do breed them in thailand for fights though. they are larger and shorter finned meaning they would kick a pet bettas butt. it is illegal in most countries to make sport of fighting animals other than humans. humans are allowed to fight. why don't you go kick your neighbor or something instead?

I'm not 100% sure that it is illegal, all I know is if you are caught doing it, you can get charged. Hence why most pet stores will only sell you one per visit. Don't try it.

Yes.
But then again, who has to find out? Im sure you can get away with it.
They are only fish, not dogs or roosters.

That is what they are built to do... Who are you to stop them? I think it's only illegal if the cops catch you gambling... Anyway, it is better to let them go down fighting than to keep them in dixie cups at petland...
