I want to use my laptop dvdrom to play DVDs since my DVD player broke. I suppose I could buy a new DVD player, but I still want to know? Does the laptop require a special graphics card? What cables do I need?

if your lapto has a dvd player more than likely it has a S-video out port. Plug this into your tv if it is under 10yrs old it Should have a S-video port. And if not get a vga to composite cord from computer store and hook up your laptop to the Yellow video input on your tv. The first method is the most logical one I assume.

From my knowledge, nope, all you need is a splicer. it's a cord that has a av outlet/inlet on one side and three other plugs on the other (it's usually a Video 1-red, L mono -white, and Audio-Yellow) just plug that into your lab and connect it to your T.V. Use the remote to change the input (or imput, i cant remember) to Console or another blue screen(usually) and Presto...you have DVD playing on T.V. i prefer to play the DVD and just keep hitting the input/imput until you see the picture playing on the screen.

P.S. You can get a splicer from any electronics store...heck, try best buy or circut city....heck even target may have some for cheaper!

Depends on the laptop -- mine has a built in RCA video out port (yellow) that I just connect up to the VCA/TV/Projector. If you don't have that, you might look for an interface between the monitor port that converts to RCA.

this site will give you a sony vaio laptop just for completing some quick online tasks! really recommend it, especially if you're broke but really want/need a laptop (like me).
