I await the abyss
out of my control
I don't think i care
but maybe i do
what is there waiting
is what they say true
soon i will find out
ready or not
now i see a bright light
shining about

I think you are off to a great start. But you need to write the poem, or you will feel as if you cheated..... well,, as said in Hamlet, To thine own self be true then thou cans't not be false to any man. So having said that, I offer you a poem on death that you can get some ideas some and I think you will be on your way!

Artist: Ralph Stanley Lyrics
Song: O Death Lyrics
O, Death
O, Death
Won't you spare me over til another year
Well what is this that I can't see
With ice cold hands takin' hold of me
Well I am death, none can excel
I'll open the door to heaven or hell
Whoa, death someone would pray
Could you wait to call me another day
The children prayed, the preacher preached
Time and mercy is out of your reach
I'll fix your feet til you cant walk
I'll lock your jaw til you cant talk
I'll close your eyes so you can't see
This very air, come and go with me
I'm death I come to take the soul
Leave the body and leave it cold
To draw up the flesh off of the frame
Dirt and worm both have a claim
O, Death
O, Death
Won't you spare me over til another year
My mother came to my bed
Placed a cold towel upon my head
My head is warm my feet are cold
Death is a-movin upon my soul
Oh, death how you're treatin' me
You've close my eyes so I can't see
Well you're hurtin' my body
You make me cold
You run my life right outta my soul
Oh death please consider my age
Please don't take me at this stage
My wealth is all at your command
If you will move your icy hand
Oh the young, the rich or poor
Hunger like me you know
No wealth, no ruin, no silver no gold
Nothing satisfies me but your soul
O, death
O, death
Wont you spare me over til another year
Wont you spare me over til another year
Wont you spare me over til another year

as i lay here late at night
waiting for death to take its flight
over my spirit,
mind,
my body,
and soul.
recalling all sins
from my first day to my last
wondering if this was just a test
and if I passed
praying every second
for one more breath
each time it's harder to stave off death

As I lay here late at night,
Waiting for death to take it's flight,
Over my spirit, over my mind,
I feel the icy fingers of death,
On my body and down my spine.
The black angel of death is beckoning me,
Waiting to pounce and it's very creepy.
I cannot see it, but I know it's there,
stalking me, I don't have a prayer.
Does death hurt? I don't know,
but I'm not ready for a tag on my toe!

So far, that's good. You're doing a good job. Is it only plain death? Maybe you can improvise in a way that "you died because you got heartbroken" or "it seems that you're already dead because your most loved person just died" Anyway, it's just a suggestion..And I think near death persons wouldn't want to write about their nearing death.

I feel a heavy darkness come over me in the silent echo of the night
Could it be
When will it all come to an end
Is it real or a dream of imagination.
Can I wake up?
I feel so unrestricted inside
GOOD LUCK that's all I have right now.

As I wait for instant death
I wait to exhale my last breath
Was my life a glowing song
Or filled with all that I did wrong?

I wonder where the next plane lies
As I shut my saddened eyes
Tell me nature, where I'll be
I know atleast I will be free.

He took off his ring and then he cried, said I'm sorry, then He sighed...Gave her a small but touching kiss and said "you know I will miss this", I wish it did not have to end this way, I wish so much that you could stay...He touched her face one last time...said goodbye now I must go as they lowered her coffin into the snow.

.. hours turn to seconds
the pain has gone away.
the night will bring them back
to take me far away.
crying for my return,
I see my mother yearn..
Its too late to turn back now,
.....

something like that?.. I hope you can use some of that. Good luck
