They never actually did break into different species, since cats and dogs descended from completely different ancestral lines. To my knowledge no one has discovered any prehistoric animal that could be said to have both cat and dog characteristics, aside from those common to most other carnivorous mammals.

The big mammalian explosion followed the demise of the dinosaurs 65million years ago. There would have been general splits into herbivores and carnivores as carnivores have features in common. The ancestor of dogs and cats would have been a very long time ago as the two are very different. There has been no fossil proposed as a common ancestor.

They didn't "break into different species". God created them as unique and individual creatures several thousand years ago.
