The more possesions they have the more important they feel. They are insecure and do not know how to showcase their talents.

Some pare impressed with material things. They're safe, they're inanimate. They can be controlled, polished and displayed. Other people envy them. They cant talk back. They have no intelligence. They'e not threatening, unless it's a weapon.

Insecurity is an emotion of general unease or nervousness without obvious cause or purpose.

A person who is insecure lacks confidence in their own value and capability, trust in themselves or others, or has fears that a present positive state is temporary and will let them down and cause them loss or distress by "going wrong" in future.

This is not to be confused with humility, which involves recognising one's failings but still maintaining a healthy dose of self-confidence. Insecurity is not an objective evaluation of one's ability but an emotional interpretation, as two people with the same capabilities may have entirely different levels of insecurity.

Insecurity may cause shyness, paranoia and social withdrawal, or alternatively it may encourage compensatory behaviours such as arrogance, aggression, or bullying, a principle enshrined in the phrase "all bullies are cowards." Many people suffer a period of insecurity during puberty, which gives rise to a lot of the stereotypical behaviours of adolescents.

Insecurity has many effects in a person's life. There are several levels of it. It nearly always causes some degree of isolation as a typically insecure person withdraws themselves to some extent. The greater the insecurity, the higher the degree of isolation. Insecurity is often rooted in a person during their childhood years. Like offense and bitterness, it grows in layer fashion, often becoming an immobilising force that sets a limiting factor in the person's life. Insecurity robs by degrees - the degree it is entrenched is the degree of power it has in the person's life.

As insecurity can be distressing and feel threatening to the psyche, insecurity can often be accompanied by a controlling personality type or avoidance, as psychological defence mechanisms.

Big trucks, designer shoes, cool hair, etc...
(We have met before in Answers by the way.)
APPEARANCES are the first thing that others, especially strangers (which can make us feel insecure and vulnerable) see when they see "us". We can either place our self confidence in our big trucks and sexy shoes or we can place it in ourselves where it should be. Material things are to hide behind. We want them to see "the things" and not the insecure "me" that's hiding behind them.
Just like the big truck, small penis theory -which many women, and even some men believe. What about those women who like/drive big trucks? Does that mean that they have or want a small penis too? Could it mean that they are insecure about their femininity enough to desire to appear masculine, or could it be that they just find some kind of security in driving a big truck?

On the contrary (assumption here) most women like to look nice when they go out into public. If it is not for others, then for themselves. Deny this, but then realize while you are denying, you may subconciously be messing with your hair, or reapplying some lipstick or checking your eyeliner in a reflective object within view. You do care what people see, otherwise you wouldn't go through the trouble to wash your hair, pick out your clothes and shoes, match your socks, apply make-up etc..
All of these are material, superficial things which can be hidden behind. In one of your other questions you asked about self confidence. An extremely self-confident person could walk into public in their underwear and a set of bunny ears on, and not really let what people think about it, effect them very much. Basically they aren't so concerned with the material things or appearances, they know they may look ridiculous, and they may be embarassed, but their self-security and confidence allows them to say "Hey, I know it's silly, you think I am silly, but I will not let it effect me." And it wouldn't.
It's all about the looks.

It is our first perception of anything (people, clothes, cars, homes, food). If it "looked" ugly, would you eat, wear, like, or live in, or drive it?
See..it works doesn't it!

Because they feel unworthy, and are hoping that their material possessions can wow people into forgetting what's missing where it really matters.
