I ran Windows Defrag less than 24 hours ago. PcPitstop runs an analysis of the fragmentation of your hard drive among other things. Here are the results that I just got:
Description Drive C
Partition format NTFS
Cluster size 4 KB
Drive label Hal 9000
Size 76245 MB
Free space 47559 MB (62%)
Junk files 56 MB (0%)
Data fragmentation 27%
File fragmentation 11%
Uncached speed 28 MB/s (72%)

I don't know whether the installation today of Service Pack 2 caused all of this fragmention, but it seem, in general, that my files need to be defragmented quite often. Anyone know of a good free disk defragmenter available?

Whats wrong with the defrag in system tools? Fragmentation happens over a period of time! Sounds more to me like you dont know what a defrag is let alone ever run one! About once every 6 to 8 weeks is more than plenty to keep the average PC in order! You can program it to run in scheduled tasks if you desire.

"I don't know whether the installation today of Service Pack 2 caused all of this fragmentation." Uhhh Yea...LOL
Anytime you make a MAJOR SP installation it's going to create Fragmentation of your Partition and or HD.
Now with that out of the way...There is NO good free Defrag programs out there...
If you want the BEST Defrag program on the market today that Works, then pay some money and get PerfectDisk...With Smart Placement it's the best...

Well I know how you feel I've been searching as well for a good free degramenter, but I turned up nill. At best you'll find one for a 30day trial heres one I reccomend diskkeeper http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp they are well known and have been around since Windows begginging.

As For your service pack2 question, It may cause fragmenting of system files. Best advice I can give you is Reinstall Windows Completely, I know its never practical but is the best way.

Learn how to build a slipstream with Nlite http://www.nliteos.com/download.html Its Geared more for advanced users but its pretty stright forward it allow you to make a copy of windows fully update with service pack 2 built off your current windows disc, however this will not work with a recovery disc.

Some other help apps to check out!
Ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/

And Registry Cleaner which again none of the good ones are free http://www.amustsoft.com/registrycleaner/

Hope this helps!
