I don't live in the US but when do you receive the letter from the colleges or how can I know if I've been accepted or not

When you completed the applications for the colleges, the forms you completed should have explained how long it would be before the decision process was completed. You should be able to check this on the websites of the colleges.

Most universities in the USA that are 'selective' will report to students about the beginning of April, and then in most cases they expect you to reply by May 1 telling them that you will enroll .
Some schools, mostly large state universities and some schools that are not selective, will use "rolling" acceptances. You can send in an application any time and the school will tell you in a month or so after all your application is complete whether you were accepted for admission or not.
