I suppose my question would be, what are children doing watching violence in the Media. The Media has a responsibility to report what's going on in the world. Of course we don't want to see or hear every nitty gritty detail but we don't want any thing edited out just because there might be children watching either.
It's the parents job to protect their children from watching such things. Not a Free speech vs. Childrens rights issue!

Who's going to define violence? The Constitution doesn't give children the right to be protected from violence in the media - sounds like a parenting job.

Free Speech gives you the right to protest violence in the media.

I believe primarily that is the job of the parents to protect their children from any and all negative influences. Unfortunately, some parents don't feel the same and allow anything and everything in the home. In the case of the media, I feel that our children who are unprotected, via watching television when parents aren't home etc., have to be protected. There are other venues for those who want to watch or display violence than public or non cable forums. Not sure if this is what you wanted to hear, but am guessing this is the heart of the question.

Free speech is about advocacy. Advocacy of you beliefs on how we should shape our society.

Violence can take various forms as well. Parents should teach their children well. Children take on what their parents show them. We can shield them from violence in the media but violence in the home will affect them more.

Children should be thought that what they see in media is not necessarily good. Talk to children directly about these violence, advocate to them that this is unacceptable. Once we are successful in this, they will shun violence by themselves.

Although I agree there should be a decorum of protection for those that are impressionable, I don't believe censoring the media is needed to protect a child. That is up to the parent, and the parent should be involved in what the child does.

I would encourage a gag order on tasteless reporters who stick a microphone in the face of a family member whose loved one was just killed, and ask them 'how do you feel?'
