I looked up Ezechiel bread (Ez 4:9, I think) and, as I read in context, I was shocked anew at the vindictiveness of God as portrayed there. Did you know that, read in context, Ezechiel was supposed to cook the bread on human dung? That was one of many odd things God told the prophet to do, to show the people how bad they were and how bad things were going to get for them. Were they any worse than anyone else of their time or any other time? Why is God so mean?

Now you understand the definition of the phrase "biblical punishment." Extreme penalties, like the death penalty, are covered by that phrase because in the Old Testament God is a very vengeful god and powerful in his wraith.

"Gods have the manners and morals of spoiled children." Robert A. Heinlein.

Also the bible is open to 100,000 different interpretations, but mostly because the story you read was written almost 3000 years ago and the values of men have changed, the bible has changed (since you are probably reading the King James revisions done in the 13th century).

Finally, according to the religion the bible was written by men, inspired by god. It is not a direct quote of god, it is only presented in a form that ancient man can understand. That's the problem with holy religious texts they were written by ancient men with ancient points of view and ancient ways of understanding things. They are rarely updated and unlike the Constitution of the United States they are dead works. This is just one reason why so many modern folk have problems with the world's religions.

Cuz the God of the Old Testament is a vengeful god...

If you get into history, you'll see that the Hebrew people
used to have a pantheon of gods like the Egyptians. The
cult of Jehovah got a larger following and threw out the rest
of the group.

Sad, but true that mankind has been worshiping this deity
for so long.

Dung was used to make bread and cook back then. It burned long with a constant heat. In Iraq some people still do it.

Personally, I'd have to say that I don't believe you can literally believe the bible. The word, the book, has been passed on since... Well, a long time ago, and things have since been lost and things have been added.
It's up to you how you interpret them and what you believe. Heck, it's up to you if you believe in god or not.
