Have three months of salary in your savings account.
Keep a strong hand on spending the first two years.
Newer isn't always better- so use low tech, save money and keep good records.
Shop banks for a good business account- NOT all banks are the same and you may not need all the services they offer and it may cost you too much.
Contact the SBA- go to the free classes and contact SCORE- get a free or cheap advisor to come out and give you pointers. They are a Senior Mentor program for businesses.
No matter if its Tires to High Tech items or a Service you are providing, get the best help you can. Always listen to other business people. It may not apply to you today- but you may need it tomorrow.
Get into the Chamber of Commerce, they will promote your business and its great for you to meet your neighbors and its a write off.
DO get a great CPA or bookkeeper and let them help you every month. You can literally writeoff that professional service with your taxes, so DO it. It will keep your records sound and the IRS happy.
Make friends with the Ciry Officials. That way you can get the inside scoop on the policies, permits and ectra...that you need to operate your business.
Alway say nothing or "hold thy tongue" about bad mouthing other businesses. It will bite you in the butt. Trust me on that.
Sponsor a little league team- get your name on that teach shirt and get a banner or water bottles with your name on it. Best marketing tool.

Go to a search engine and type "small business opportunities" and you will find a plenty of opportunities. You have not mentioned about your investment potential, the area from which you will operate and what are your capabilities. Yours is a blind question. Anyway my first suggestion will open up your thinking power and you can choose a business.

You could go to your local drug dealer and claim your own corner in the ghetto.
OR
Find something- a service or product- that someone already has or is currently doing... and do it better for less. It's that simple to be successful in your own business.
