Dell is a good US brand for Laptop. I have a used several HP/Compaq Laptops, IBM/Lenovo Laptop and just a year ago a Dell Notebook. All I can say is that it is very durable. Dropped it several times and has not failed. They are built to be abused. In reality there is no perfect laptop. Many brands will claim them. Dell admits they also have problems with a few models but the good part is that they fix it immediately so you would get the best product and services. Be careful with brands who has a lot of bells and whistle but little to no service support available. Good luck!

I would be careful in purchasing a Dell as I bought a Dell home computer a few years ago. I assumed that it could be upgraded if necessary and when I found it was not powerful enough to run some of the newer programs and games the kids wanted, I found out that it could not be upgraded as they are not designed to do this. Basically you pay for what you get and Dell are cheaper for a reason.

The 1405 is a great little computer. For the needs you request, it should be right up your alley.

They have a couple of deals on that machine right now. They have a special for up to $202 off the e1405 and 20% off $999 inspiron laptops. You can get these coupons at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html

Good Luck

I bought my laptop on ebay and got a really good deal on it. Its a gateway 400 series but it was able to be upgraded and even runs my memory hungry design programs, and was wireless ready. I only paid $600 for it and its been the best computer purchase I've made so far. I would check there, you can find great deals on ebay.

From personal experience, I would say not purchasing from one of the big boys like Dell.
Their computers are very expensive and most hardware sub-par.

Check out a computer shopper magazine. Try looking for the editor's choice. There are some smaller companies out there that charge much less for the same hardware, with better, cheaper warranties. I understand many of them are less casual-computer-buyer friendly, but you should be much more satisfied with them!

I am an MCP and A+ Cert tech and I would not buy a DELL if Micheal Dell himself gave me one. Thier reputation, from my point of view, is horrible. Yes, they have wonderful customer service. If their computer was so good, then why did my boss have to go back 4 times to get his Dell fixed? Customer service is great as long as you do not have to use it.

What ever you buy Dell, Toshiba, EverReady, buy extended warranty after the first year, if the lap top is still in one piece.........
