My gandson was born last Thurs, but by the time he went home, he had the worst diaper rash I've ever seen on a baby. The hosp. made up this stuff with three different cream. But it was so thick when you had to clean the baby it's so thick and you just about rub him raw. I told my son just use creamy destine.
Don't think it it was the diaper he would have had rash all over where the diaper touches

I've baby sat for many children and I think the best way to cure diaper rash in newborns is to keep the child thickly diapered making sure that the diaper area is coated with a mixture of Desitin and Baby Oil. I once was asked to babysit for newly single mom that had to work and had a 12 month old boy. I replaced an older woman that did not pay attention to the boy and his diaper rash was terrible. The boys behind was red and his penis and scrotum were inflammed and warm to the touch. I carefully bathed him and made a mixture of Destin and baby oil that I mixed in my palm. I gently and carefully applied the ointment to the effected areas and applied a liberal coating to his entire diaper area. Within 3-4 days the diaper rash was all but gone.

If the child is a toddler, I recommend letting the child go "bare bottom" to let dry air help with the healing. About 5 years ago, I baby sat a 9 year old boy that wore diapers and he too had a nasty diaper rash. I discovered the Desitin/Baby Oil mixture idea quite by accident. I had given the child his bath and had him laying on his bed to diaper him. I squeezed out a stiff gooey mixture of Desitin and tried to rub it on the boys red inflamed rash. The poor child whimpered because the rash was too painful and the Desitin was so thick that it hurt when I applied it. So what I did was squeeze a dollop of Desitin into my palm and put a few drops of baby oil on top and mixed it until it spread more easily. Because the child was older, I let him play "bare bottom" so that his skin could be exposed to clean fresh air. I reapplied the ointment before diapering him for bed. Again within 4 days or so, the diaper rash was gone and the child was much more comfortable.

I think keeping the child clean, properly diapered with a Desitin/Baby Oil mixture will do the trick .

Good luck :)

I like Desitine Ointment. However, at the hospital we use a product called Calmaceptine ointment. It is a combination of products. It works really well. They product from the hospital may not be meant to be completely rubbed off. A true barrier cream should be wiped until visibly clean and then recoated with another heavy coating after a BM or void. I think a great way to heal baby diaper rash is to allow for some air to get to the site. After a void, put the baby on a blanket or towel naked. Let the troubled areas dry out a bit and within the hour, recoat with the ointment and put a new diaper on loosely. Is it possible that the baby has a yeast rash - are there tiny bumps in the rash? Is there any white drainage in the grooves of the skin? It is possible to contract a yeast problem at a hospital from contact with Mom during birth, or even from contact with people with artificial nails. If it is yeast, the baby may need a different type of anti-fungal treatment from the pediatrician - don't let it get too bad. GOOD LUCK!

Some babies just have sensitive skin and develop rashes easily.
Also, if the baby is being breastfed, he may be sensitive to something mom ate (spicy food?).
My first son was and still is very prone to rashes and I had some difficulty finding what would work for him. Desitin and Penetan both seemed to be too strong for him as he would scream with pain if I put either one on raw skin. What I found to work really well was Polysporin cream. The one for kids is great because it has Lidocaine in it which numbs the pain while healing the rash. It's something most parents have in their medicine chest, it can be found at any pharmacy and no prescription is needed!! (That's why I started using it - 3 am, nothings open!)
For daily prevention I have been using good old baby powder. Johnson and Johnson has a great one with corn starch.

Hope these tips help and congratulations on the little one.

Ok- so diaper rash is heart breaking. Our pediatrician recommended Lobana peri-garde to us! We have 4 children and wouldn't use anything else. It has a high concentration of VIT A,D and E. Absolutely works wonders!! Can be used on any rash or chapped skin! It clears a red sore bottom over night! I have so many friends that are hooked on it as well! We bought it through the Ped clinic but now buy online lobanaproducts.com. One other important tip would be to rinse out your butt wipes before wiping the side bottom. There is something in even the sensitive wipes that just stings!!!!

Your grandson probably got the prescription strength "Butt Paste." My son had the same problem. His poor little bottom was just about purple from the diaper rash! I'd say keep using the cream. Don't try to scrub it off, it'll just make it worse. We just gave the baby a regular bath and gently wiped to get most of it off and left the rest alone. You're going to put more on when he gets out of the bath anyway. That prescription stuff really works. I'd stick with it.

Diaper rash can be in just one area & is very common in newborns prob the reaction to his urine or BM or just sat in a diaper for too long. Use what they gave him & a warm soapy wash cloth (no wipes!!!) to clean his bottom, rinse with a clean warm wash cloth and pat dry w/ a dry wash cloth (yes alot of loads of towels) and apply cream, change his diaper every 30 to 40 mins. They really need to take him to the doctor they may want to prescibe a steroid cream to help the healing along, ps dont forget to take care of the cirrumcision incision if it was done. Good Luck!

Penaten cream is excellent for curing diaper rash...if that doesnt' work then I suggest going to the child's pedeatrician....perhaps it's a yeast infection which can happen and then you'll need a special cream for that, I dont know a brand name, but I had to do this once and it is over the counter.....best of luck, congrats on your grandson!

Leave the cream on there! Even at bath time. It will work as a protective barrier for his delicate skin. Anything with a zinc base works this way and wont harm him if you just leave it on... Also I would think hes VERY young for a nappy rash. If the mum is breast feeding is she drinking something acidic like orange juice? Change his nappy as often as you can or if possible let him go in the nude. just lay a towel or cloth nappy over his doodle for protection from fountain wees!

My son is 4 months & has never had diaper rash. We read to let the area dry for 10 mins before putting on a new diaper and to treat a potential rash w/A&D ointment. We also use Aquaphor and it seems to help w/ his eczema.
