He is a good player but some of these salaries are just getting out of hand!! I know it's been like that for years but it would be nice too see one of the great ball players stand up and say I'll take less money to make the team better!! I'm sure there have been some but you don't hear much about it. I'm only 26 but I like the guy's that played back in the 30's and 40's they played for the love of the game and most of them had other jobs!! We wonder why when we go to a game and a beer is 8 dollars!!!

At todays rate i think 85 million is a steal for him. Someone said that he is not in the top 5, but I cant think of any other 2nd basemen that are better all around then Utley. Love the way he plays. He plays hard and give 150% every game. Hustles on every grounder even if it is at someone, which causes the player to hurry a throw and possible throw it away. Love the grit he plays with. I've watched him the whole way through the minors and he is the real deal.

Absolutely not; Chase Utley is not worth $85 million over 7 years. In comparison to a recent contract, the one of Albert Pujols, he signed for the same amount of years and only $15 million more over 7 years. Pujols and Utley broke into the major leagues around the same time, and have both been playing around 4 years. Of course $15 million is alot, but deferred over 7 years and in baseball contract terms its value is severely depreciated. Albert Pujols is without doubt the best hitter in baseball today, you're telling me that a 28 year old second baseman who had one breakout season, that still only yielded 102 rbi's deserves approximately $2 million less a year than a monster with 40/120 every single year??? please, don't make me laugh.... $8-10 would've been fine for him, not $12-13.

Baseball Player salaries are ridiculous! Not to say a very few aren't worth the money because they sell tickets and put people in the seats, but Gil Meche 55 mil? I know I won't ever say to myself "I gotta work overtime so I can go see Gil Meche pitch. Ted Lilly 40 mil? are you freakin' kidding me????? if Utley is worth 85 mil, what is Ryan Howard worth? So now you have two phillies that are worth 200-300 MILLION? Insane.

Nobody is worth $12million a year, but Utley only has 2.5 years in the big leagues and it's probably less than he would have been awarded if he'd gone to arbitration. Plus, he's the Phillies for 7 years and they avoid him going to free agency, where, if he keeps playing like last year, $12million will seem like a steal. It's not a bad deal for him or the Phillies overall.

Unfortunately like everything else these days, baseball salaries are way out of wack. No one in the game is worth that kind of money, but today's atheletes and their agents hold clubs for ransom, as if they do not pay the type of salaries they want, they will certainly file for free agency and there are always owners out there that have more money than brains. No, Utley IS NOT worth $85 million dollars, but in today's sports (business) world if you don't pay it, someone else will.

Not really. He had some good numbers last season, but not worth $85 million. If he was rated overall with other 2B in the league, he probably won't be in the top 5.

I would say in reality no, I do know if any baseball player is worth $85 million. But given his productivity and the current free agent market the Phillies probably made a good move locking up one of their players, rather than allow him to test the free agent market in the future.

No one playing a game is worth 85 Million dollars. But in todays market it may be a steal.

He is one of the best 2B power hitters in the game and in his prime at 28. I think 7 years is a little long, but $85 million would put him at about $12 million a year, which isn't completely unreasonable of a player of his caliber.
