i did this problem 3 times and i keep getting it wrong. i got 9500011.

the question is the population of washington in 1990 was 4900000 and growing at the rate of 18% every 10 years. at that rate, approximately what will the population be in 2020.?

This is the way you do it

In 1990 population is =4900000

population in another 10 years which means in 2000 will be 4900000+(4900000*(18/100)) =5782000

then the populaton in another 10 years which means in 2010 the population will be calculated by using the calculated above value

in 2010 it will be 5782000+(5782000*18/100) = 6822760


Then repeat it to 2020 also
in 2020 = 6822760+(6822760*(18/100)) = 8050856.8

so the answer is 8050857(approximately)

2020 - 1990 = 30 years
18% growth every 10 years, we have 3x10 years = 30 years
population at 1990 = 4,900,000
population at 2000 = 4,900,000 x 1.18 = 5,782,000
population at 2010 = 5,782,000 x 1.18 = 6,822,760
population at 2020 = 6,822,760 x 1.18 = 8,050,857
Basically, you just have to do 4,900,000 x 1.18 x 1.18 x 1.18 = 8,050,857

In 1990, it was 4,900,000.

Growing at the rate of 18% every 10 years. There are three 10-year periods between 1990 and 2020.

4,900,000 * 1.18 * 1.18 * 1.18
= 4,900,000 * 1.18^3
= 4,900,000 * 1.643032
= 8,050,857.

are you multiplying 3x.18 then times 4900000 because it should be .18x 4900000= answer.. then add that too 4900000 that is the population for 2000 then times that by .18 and add that answer to the 2000 population giving you the 2010 and then times that one by .18 and add that to the 2010 population and you have the 2020 population on your calculator screen!!CONGRATZ =)

5782000 *18%=1 040 760
1040760 +5782000=6 822 760(in 2010)

I did this problem different, I got the same answer but I was wondering how you all multiplied by 1.18. Just curious.
