dell might not always be the cheapest but when my laptop i bought from them broke 4 months after i bought it.(i purchased a 1yr warranty) they over nighted me a new laptop... ive been loyal ever since.
side notes:
Mac - like it alot, pricey
Hp- like these aot too, there a little cheaper then dells
-doug
oh an dont buy alot of ram, it is always overpriced and its real easy to install your self. you can usually buy it for half of the price they sell it for from
www.newegg.com << they also have really good deals on laptops.

It really depends on how you want to use a computer. You have always focus on the following: Internet, word processing or maybe doing some work with Microsoft Office or other applications that comes with Windows.
Is the operating system going to be a hassle between your friends who are using the computer- Windows, or Tiger OS X for Mac.
If you are just searching on the Internet, email, and doing some office applications then stick to either HP or Mac.
It is really up to you on how you want to use a computer. I have been using HP for a very long time. Macs are pretty good but I don't think they have a $500 desktop at this range. Then I switched to Toshiba because I needed a laptop to do my web design and development and multimedia stuff, and doing freelance.
It just really depends on how you use it.
In my opinion, these are reliable HP, Mac or maybe if you know someone who knows how to build computers in such a low price like $400 to $1000. Don't buy Compaq or Dell-- they put cheap parts which gives you poor performance and may last around less than 2 years, and causes some problems.

Lady, the best system is the one that YOU Build.
All firms are out to make money, not to do you a favor!
Go to a couple of sites and build you a computer on line, copy the basket and paste it to a document and do the same at a different site. Then you can compare and buy what YOU like.

Theres MAC and then there are pc's. You definitely wont get a Mac for around $500. If you want a computer that cheap you will have to go with dell. A decent computer will cost you over$800.

Macs always last longer and have less problems than pc's. But if you insist on getting a pc, then HP, and dell are basically the best, especially because of their such low prices.
