i've had lots of great experiences and a few bad on ebay. You just have to be very careful when purchasing anything. It takes a special effort by the buyer. Kind of like shopping in "real" stores does. Here are some tips i recommend:
Make sure to check the sellers feedback. If they have more then 3 negatives left by 3 different users then don't buy anything from them. That sounds like a small amount but that means that 3 separate times someone felt cheated because they bought from that seller.
Make sure shipping is reasonable. You know how much whatever your buying weighs so figure approximately $1.50 per pound. That is a very round figure but it will help you to see if the seller is gouging on shipping. Also account for the fact that most sellers charge for packing materails - which is reasonable. So figure $2-3 for that. See how much different your guesstimate on shipping is from the sellers. If it is way off... then don't buy from them... someone else is likely to have the same product with reasonable shipping. Example: a 3 lb box should not be more than $7-$8. If it is much higher than that then it's not worth buying.
Make sure that the way you want to pay is an accepted form of payment from the seller. It will just save you lots of problems later.
Make sure the product they are selling is what you want. If you want new ... make sure it says it is new and not "like new". Really read the description of the item.
Be creative in your search. Don't look for towels .. look for towel - you will get more that way to choose from. If you want a red one look in the item title AND description - not everyone puts main selling points in the title. Don't limit yourself to one category - not everyone puts the same things in the same categories, ... you may miss out on that "perfect" item if you limit yourself to only looking in certain places.
When in doubt ASK. There is a link at the top of the page that says ask the seller a question. Use it!!!! If you have any question at all about the product then ask the seller. How they answer and how fast they answer will also give you an inkling of what they will be like if you end up winning the auction.
And most important! Have fun. Ebay has tons of amazing auctions on there with some great sellers. Just be aware of who you are buying from and with a little extra time ebay can be very much worht the extra effort. And there is almost nothing you can't find on ebay.
i have one more tip but as i was writing i forgot it. If i remember what it was i will edit this and add it.
Good luck and have fun!

Been buying and selling on eBay for over 6 years. Yes, had had some bad buying experiences, but mostly good. The 2 most important things to do is #1 check the sellers feedback (don't buy from them if they get a lot of complaints) and #2 if you are unsure ask the seller a question before bidding.
If you buy something and it is not as described you can file a complaint/dispute and very likely get your money back (if you pay with PayPal and they find in your favor). This is also the case if you do not receive the item (just happened to me a month ago, first time since I joined, but was given a full refund by PayPal).
Most people on eBay are honest, but unfortunately there may be a few bad apples. Just take precautions and if you have questions go to the eBay help or users forums, you can learn alot. Also, have fun!

Yes, I did few times- not all seller are honest. There is few things you can do to protect yourself from getting ripped of though. First of all, check the seller rating. If there is a lot of negatives, do not bid- no matter how tempting (super low price etc.) Also, read the description carefully, make sure that the item is really new, never used etc. If you are buying item such as perfume, cosmetics etc, make sure the person sells lots of them, that will probably mean it's fresh and someone is not pushing a 2 year old bottle of perfume they got for Xmas and did not like. If elsem fails and you feel you were cheated, can you file a claim- do it before you leave a negative feedback though, and always try to resolve the issue with seller first. I've been buying and selling for about 5 yrs now and have to say that it can be a good deal if you are careful and do your homework first. Good luck!

yeah, I sent my money order for a purchase I made and never got my product sent. After, waiting a few weeks I emailed the guy about the status of my purchase and he said that he didn't send the products because my payment must have been lost in the mail.. (yeah right!!!..) I waited a while longer and saw that others were having the same problem with him. I left a comment on his feedback form (not very professional-- name calling, cussing, calling him out...) and he left the same type of message on my feedback-- but wait, I actually did my part of the deal.:) Too much of a hassle to correct that. Thats when I quit using ebay.

Actually, yes. Some jerk stole five bucks from me. I was buying a DVD from someone in Florida. After he took out the money he vanished, with my money. And I never got the DVD. That was the last time I was on Ebay. About 1yr 5months ago.
