i prefer auto, manual is repetitive and a pain in traffic jams. i prefer to have one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the radio buttons or phone or just relaxing on the arm rest or rest my head on my hand like "the thinker"

after being in the transmission business for many years it has been my experience that manual transmissions usually have a longer life (depending on the driving habbits of those behind the wheel) however there are different things that need maintenence and replacement like the clutch, hydrolics, master cylinder, slave , etc. in the automatics they are very dependable but there are some to look out for. the worst automatic transmissions right now are the fords. after running a transmission shop in portland oregon for years we found that out of combined transmission jobs over a 3 year period that the fords had the greatest failure rate by far followed by chrystler products and subaru, gm, and toyota. the european cars also hold up very well and speaking of european cars the new chrystler models for the most part have gone with a mercedes benz style transmission and they should prove to be very reliable. remember on automatics to change your transmission fluid every 20,000 miles regardless what the owners manual says and DONT EVER let anyone flush your transmission during a fluid change as many times it creates problems and does more harm than good.... hope that helps

If you're asking this question, get an automatic :)
To most people driving a manual is a pain.
To the others, they like to have complete control of their car.
Its not like one is better (again, to the average commuter only), but it really depends on what YOU want.
If you spend 2 hours a day in thick traffic, I dont think a stick would be much fun at all. but if you live in California and you enjoy driving, it'd be a crime to buy an automatic!
In the end, yes, manuals are more efficient but there is also the cost of the clutch you have to replace. Autos can potentially last the lifetime of the car!
So cost wise I'd say its a tie.
It all comes back to YOU and what you want!

It depends on your preference. If you get into driving, than a manual is the way to go. If you use your car as a rolling diner & chat room then go for auto. economy is about the same due to lock up torque convertors in modern automatic transmissions.

When you go to get a manual most people think of it as being one with the car. On the other hand an auto is great for a person who loves drivuing but isnt that good at it.

I wouldn't give my 5 speed ranger up for any other truck out there. I love it, it has awesome power and I know how to make it do what i want it to do, and how it will react when i do somthing. I've got out of a few accidents because of a simple downshift to get that little extra oomph of power.
I had a car cut me off on ice and spin out, and i hit the brakes and my (useless) ABS kicked in and swung my back end out, I dropped a gear and stepped on the gas, and that swung my rear end around, and then reverse. I managed to miss the curb and miss him both by very little, i did however end up pointed the wrong way on a one way street, but i didn't hit anybody (it would have been classified as by fault under following too close, i know, its gay) but i survived, my truck survived, and he got the finger. I probably would have creamed him doing 40km/h if i was in an automatic.

it depends, if you want to just have a car for daily use get an automattic, if you want a car to race and have fun with your friends get a manual, its all about personal preference, but dont be fooled into beliving that manual cars get better gas mileage, it all depends on how you drive, in anycar if you drive slow and at a steady speed your gas mileage will be pretty high but if you race and rev up really high your mpg will be very low, but i really like having a manual because its just alot more fun to drive and i really like driving, and i live in so-cal so i deal with bad traffic alot and it isnt that hard.

In a big city or urban environment, I think an automatic transmission would be better.

manual is more fun to drive and gets better gas milage. It also generally makes you a better driver because it makes you communicate with the car more, and keeps you from getting distracted.
