An atom that has any kind of charge, positive or negative through electron fluctuations is called an ion.

It is called an ion

1) If it has lost electrons, the ion is charged positively and called cation (ex : Na+ = sodium ion positive)

2) If it has win electrons, the ion is charged negatively and called anion (ex : Cl- = chlorine ion negative)

Otherwise (when they gain electrons it seems only to be "atoms with tendency to gain electrons."
