I can't think of any good reason for restricting any type of footwear, except in the case of safety concerns (to protect those who are too stupid to know better than, say, to wear flip-flops in the welding shop)

Why shouldn't they? A school is no more responsible for something happening to someone's feet than that person is. Talk about violation of rights. If a school is that picky, they can have their kids sign a release form ensuring that the school isn't responsible for anything that happens to their feet as a result of choosing to wear sandals, even though that'd be ridiculous. Of course, this is null and void if the school in question is a private school with a uniform.

I have a slight problem with sandals: I live in an earthquake prone area.It rains every day and it is cold outside. If we have an evacation (fire, earthquake, bomb scare, etc.), my students will be outside in the cold with flip-flops. In an area that has beautiful weather at all times, go nuts!
