While I don't know about your school, at mine the freshman formal was actually a semi-formal dance. Which equates into a knee length dress, not an ankle length one. So you not wanting a long dress is probably a good thing.

Look for a cute party or cocktail dress. I would stay away from the popular colors (black, white, red, silver, and gold) as to stand out from the crowd. I would also look for one a bit more youthful, this doesn't mean childish, so you don't look like yet another girl trying to be someone she's not. Excuse me for a minute here, but nothing says tacky like a 15 year old trying to look 25.

Just find a dress that flatters your body type and coloring, and you'll look sensational.

If you don't know what season your coloring is, try this easy to use link:

Try Deb for some great teen dresses at affordable prices. This is not the time for a $300 dress, you'll probably only wear it once since your body is still growing and changing.

Ashley-
go to stores and try on all the different styles.
since its bride season- brides maid dresses are in great supply everywhere- look at them.

Then add your own flair, like fancy jewelry or even a sequence belt.

Pop into Claire's for some silver hair pins and fancy shiny earrings, wear your hair up and that will change your whole LOOK.

Get some fancy silver shoes and purse- NOW on sale- since the holidays are over. These classic color will never go out of style and will match almost all dresses.

Since you are a Freshman- keep it youthful- NOT sexy!
Go for Pink, Purple, Blue or Green- pick a color that looks great with your skin color and hair color. I always recommend the school colors if they "look good on you" its a little thing that in the future you will look back and think that was even more special.
That way, the date's flowers will match and look great.

I also think that spring formal SHOULD be spring colors and DO wear fresh babies breath flowers in your hair or even little silk roses, tucked into that french twist and wrapped around a purse. That is classy and very pretty.

Its the small details that make a pretty girl into a class act.
Try new things NOW- and have your dress & entire outfit ready a month before- don't tell anyone- the key to a perfect arrival is the element of surprise. Trust me on that one!.

Don't drop lots of cash here- its only one dance.
I would ask an old friend or older sister if they have an old dress, most will just give them to you. That way you can get the other stuff and hey you will have the pictures for ever- you don't need the dress.

I actually wore White to all my formal events in highschool- they were literally wedding dresses altered to "tea length" or cut to my knees with strappy silver or ivory hose/shoes. I was only 4'11" tall, so I dressed to be taller in "mono" colors.

if you have light blonde hair, a cute little black dress that goes to the calves is nice.
