i need to hook all of the cables back to the hard drive and cd-rom...but i'm not sure which one goes where.

(its all apart because we swapped out the cd-rom drive awhile back. but since my other pc died, i need to get this one up and running for the time being. i unfortunately do not speak to the person who gave it to me, and helped me swap out the drive)

Plug 1 end of your IDE cable to the motherboard marked IDE1. The side that is colored goes to PIN1 on the motherboard. I assume your IDE cable comes with 2 connectors on the other end. Ensure the shorting link is set to Master for the hard drive & Slave for the CD-ROM. Plug them to each of the drives (does not matter which goes to where) but you have to align the colored side to PIN1 (usually the colored side is near the power connector) on both the drives. Plug the power cables (its the one with 2 black, 1 white & 1 yellow).
Voila! You're setup for the drives!

Hi. Most cables can only go in one way. This will help you. The hard drive and CD-ROM have a jumper on the back, a little piece of plastic about 1/4 inch long. On the hard drive it should be placed on MA (Master) and the CD-ROM should be on SL (Slave). There are two connections, one for power which has 4 pins and one for data which is a ribbon cable. Hope this helps.

The floppy drive (if you have one) will be easy - it is the one that is smaller than the other two and has a slit in it. When hooking up the hard drive and CD - both cables are interchangeable (I am assuming you have IDE drives). Make sure the the red or blue stripe on the cable go on the power connection end. Both the CD drive and hard drive run on the same kind of power connector. The floppy drive is the small one.
