37.5% = 0.375

0.375x = 285000
x = 285000 / 0.375
= $760000.

The population doesn't really matter. That number was just thrown in to throw you off. You have to take the amount of the education budget, $285,000 and divide by 37.5% to obtain the overall budget or a total of $760,000. You can check the figures by taking the $760,000 and multiplying that by 37.5% and you get your education budget of $285,000. :)

Hey, Zatz. How can $285,000 be more than a third (or 33.3%) of $7,600,000? Sorry, that's not the correct answer. One too many zeroes.

How to find percentage:

You take whatever the percentage is equal to over the total. Since we dont' know what the total is we'll use the value "x" so: 285000/x

take the percentage over 100% so: 37.5/100

cross multiply by multiplying the numerator of the first equation with the denominator of the second equation and vis versa

285000/x = 37.5/100

285,000*100=37.5*x

28500000=37.5x

solve like any other equation

7,600,000=x
