I'm a girl with kind of extremely small hands, so it's a little difficult for me to hold the strings down on my fender bass. Are there any options open for us small handed bassists or should i just reluctantly give it up? Could it just be the kind of bass I'm using?

I agree with other posters. Check the setup of your bass; the action may be too high and lighter guage strings could be a big help, too. If this doesn't work, search for small scale or 3/4 basses. The usually have a 30 inch scale neck and would be much easier to play for someone with small hands.

Don't give up! Rhonda Smith, bassist for Prince, is small and she plays Fenders. MC Divinity (Victor Wooten Band, Beyonce) is small, too. We need more girls hanging with the low end, so please don't give up!

Hope it works out for you.

i would first try a lighter gauge of strings. it could be that your action is too high. if all else fails, there are basses that have smaller necks. another note, it is very interesting to practice playing (even only whole notes!) while putting the least amount of pressure on the strings without making them buzz. it is very surprising sometimes how little pressure you actually have to exert. pushing down too hard will fatigue your hands and fingers faster than normal

It could be the bass you are using.

Have someone check the set-up of your bass, with particular focus on the bridge.

Consider getting a bass with a smaller scale and/or lower action.

I had that problem. Go demo a Series A. The frets are closer.
