I have heard that vet's prefer to train vet tech's themselves, and not have them learn from another source - like a school. I have been planning on going to a vet tech program/college. What is required to get a job at a clinic or other animal work place? What about certification exams or getting your license (sp?) --- ?

Hello! Hope your day/night is going well for you. I would go to school, only because when you work with a vet and learning on the job, you get the hands on but sometimes the book knowledge out weighs it in the advantages of a good education so that you know exactly what they are teaching you without any second guesses. Good luck in your endevors, your gonna love this profession! ~^..^~

It depends on the individual vet. The best thing to do would be to contact the vets in your area and talk to them about what they require in order to work with them. See whether they would prefer someone who has certification or an associates degree. If they do, it doesn't hurt to volunteer at the Humane Society or other nonprofit organization in order to get some real-life experience to go along with your formal education.

Good luck!

im a vet doctor, and i will prefer a vet tech that have a degree in the school, than a vet tech who learn from another way, because it would be more helpfull for me someone who knows what to do rather to teach someone, i live in mexico, and here isnt that carrer
vet tech, and if you want someone to help you in your clinic it would be a vet doctor who just came out of the school, and always do not know nothing about to help you because they study for doctors, not tech, and you need to help them to learn that things, that if we have that carrer, and youneed to pay like a specialist, and is more expensive.
better to learn about your job, and you are going to have better experience and better pay,

I work at one of the top equine clinics in the country and haven't gone to school to tech. If you want to make a career out of it, go to school. Make sure wherever you go has a good training program for their techs. It'll make everyone's job a lot easier!!
