Gerontology is the scientific study of the phenomena of ageing.
It encompasses the study of all the aspects beginning from molecular level to the macro level. Geneticists want to know what changes occur in the structure and function of the genes causing this. At cellular level, a cytologist wants to know what happens to cell organelles etc. Histologists study changes at tissue level and at organ level. What diseases are characteristic of old age and how to stem those changes can also be studied in the field of gerontology.

What is Gerontology?

Aging is a multidisciplinary field. This means that the study of aging combines or integrates information from several separate areas of study. Biology, sociology, and psychology are the "core" or basic areas, along with content from many other areas of study such as public policy, humanities, and economics.

Gerontology is the study of the aging processes and individuals as they grow from middle age through later life. It includes:

the study of physical, mental, and social changes in older people as they age
the investigation of the changes in society resulting from our aging population
the application of this knowledge to policies and programs. As a result of the multidisciplinary focus of gerontology, professionals from diverse fields call themselves "gerontologists"
Geriatrics is:

the study of health and disease in later life
the comprehensive health care of older persons and the well-being of their informal caregiver

Gerontologists are professionals who specialize in studying or working with older adults. There are several different types of gerontologists. Research gerontologists conduct research on the aging process, social structures, and living environments of older persons in an effort to understand and enrich the lives of elders. Applied gerontologists work directly with older persons, communicating with and analyzing individuals, families, and groups. They may also provide their services to people in nursing homes, senior citizen centers, and other similar facilities. Administratively oriented gerontologists use their training and management skills to develop programs and coordinate services that are necessary for services to run smoothly. These professionals may have degrees or training in nursing, psychology, sociology, demography, gerontology, or other social science or social services-related professions. Gerontologists are responsible for educating, researching, and advancing the broader causes of older people by giving informative presentations, publishing books and articles that pertain to the aging population, producing relevant films and television programs, and producing new graduates of these various disciplines in college and university settings.
